Roman Catholic Cardinal. Roman born Pietro Fumasoni Biondi received his education at the Pontifical Roman Seminary and was ordained priest on April 17, 1897. Faculty member of the Pontifical Urbanian Athenueum "De Propaganda Fide" between 1897 and 1916 and staff member of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, on November 14, 1916, he was elected archbishop of the titular see of Doclea and appointed apostolic delegate to the East Indies, receiving his episcopal consecration on the following December 10 at the chapel of the Pontifical Urbanian Athenueum De Propaganda Fide from Cardinal Domenico Serafini OSB.Cas., prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. Named apostolic delegate to Japan on December 6, 1919 and later secretary of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith on June 14, 1921, successively he was named apostolic delegate in the United States of America on December 14, 1922. Pope Pius XI created him cardinal priest in the consistory of March 13, 1933 with the title of the Santa Croce in Gerusalemme and appointed him prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith on March 16, an office which he held until his death, which occurred after a long illness on July 12, 1960 in his native Rome. His body lies buried in the crypt of the chapel of the Sacred Congregation of the Propaganda Fide at the local Campo Verano Cemetery.
