Hershel Lyle Taylor, Sr
Birth: Oct. 10, 1923
Saint Joseph
Buchanan County
Missouri, USA
Death: Dec. 5, 2007
Saint Joseph
Buchanan County
Missouri, USA

Hershel Lyle Taylor was born in St Joseph, Buchanan, Missouri, the youngest of five children. He was the brother of Georgia Vorden (1916-1970), Sylvia Maxine (1917-2006 ), Dollye Gertrude, and Harold Oliver (1921-2002). His parents were Henry Logan Taylor, Jr (1891-1965) and Delphia Angeline Williams Taylor Wallace (1893-1963), but they divorced when he was a baby. His mother was a single parent for several years until she met Ezra Ernest Wallace (1904-1983), who stepped up and provided a stepfather for the family.
Hershel and the family grew up during an economically hard time, and it was difficult to take care of a large family during the depression. His mother worked hard at many jobs to feed and care for them, along with the help of the entire family. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps, which would later become the United States Air Force, after the United States entered World War II, and was trained as an aircraft mechanic. He spent the next 30 years in the Air Force, taking his family to live in many places around the United States, each time he was transferred.
Hershel married Betty, his childhood sweetheart, and together they were blessed with nine children: Hershel, Jr., Linda, Dianna, Sharon, Karen, Theresa, Jeannette, Connie, and Patty. Because the children lived in many different states during their childhood, they married in many places, so Hershel's grandchildren and great grandchildren are scattered far and wide across the world.

Hershel was my favorite Uncle. He was always kind and gentle, and always had a smile for my sisters and me. Aunt Betty was the perfect military wife: patient, flexible, and good-natured with everyone, who took moving in stride. My father, his brother Harold, took our family to several different states to visit when I was growing up, and my sisters and I made some great friends with his children.
Sadly missed by his children and grandchildren, Hershel and Betty are cherished in memory.
