Captain Fred Christensen was a member of the 56th Fighter Group in the European Theater of Operations, a renowned unit know as "Zemke's Wolfpack" for its commander, Colonel "Hub" Zemke. Flying a single-engine P-47 Thunderbolt he downed 21 German aircraft on his own and shared credit for the 22nd plane. Christensen set a record for an American aviator with six kills for a single day's mission. For his service in air combat, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Silver Star and the Air Medal. After the war he was a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard. He served as a base commander and flew in the Air Force Reserve. He eventually reached the rank of Lt. Colonel prior to his retirement. (bio by: Dave Jones)
