Robert Lee "Bob" Akins
Birth: Jul. 11, 1925
Creek County
Oklahoma, USA
Death: Jul. 16, 1985
Greene County
Missouri, USA

Only Son of Carl Lee Akin/Akins, b.18 May 1890 in Aurora, Lawrence County, MO & d.23 Jul 1942 in Neosho, Newton County, MO and Tina M. Greer b.12 Feb 1892 in Monett, Barry County, MO & d.19 Aug 1933 in Sapulpa, Creek County, OK and who were married 17 Dec 1923 in Mt. Vernon, Lawrence County, MO.

Bob lost his mother to cancer when he was 8 yrs old and his father in a tragic railroad accident when he was 17. His Aunt Dona (Akin) Hayden & her husband Jack took Bob in to live with them, but he enlisted in the Navy in 1943 after a few months and entered WWII. He served with the Seabees as a Carpenters Mate in the Pacific on both the Islands of Kwajalein and on the Island of Tinian, near Saipan. He was honorably discharged 4 Mar 1946.

Bob, as he was known to his friends, was a 3rd generation railroad man starting his career, after returning from WWII, with Frisco Railroad in Tulsa, OK, as a switchman. His father, Carl Lee Akin/Akins, worked for the Frisco Railroad, as did his Grandfather, Richard Leslie Akin b.17 Oct 1868 in Burkesville, Cumberland County, KY & d.7 Oct 1932 Joplin, Jasper County, MO. Frisco later merged with Burlington Northern where he became Asst General Manager in Springfield, MO. Bob never lost his deep rooted railroad knowledge and passion for hard work, after entering management. I personally accompanied him on many derailments and actually witnessed him crawl under a derailed diesel engine, in a 'suit', to instruct them where to place jacks and cables to begin uprighting an engine.

Bob married Margaret Ida Reed, b.9 Oct 1924 in Gillham, Sevier County, AR & d.30 Sep 2002 in Hoover, Jefferson County, AL, on 11 Jan 1947 in Tulsa Oklahoma.

They had 3 grateful children, who are still living.
