Edward Earl Sharp, Sr. was born on August 19, 1919 in a little place called Fratersville, Anderson County, Tennessee. He was usually called Earl by his family members, and was called Ed by others when he became an adult. His parents were Samuel Thomas Sharp and Martha Ann Cooper Sharp. His family surname was spelled without the "e" on the end, but when he married, his new wife started spelling the name with the "e" on the end.

He grew up in a family of coal miners, and would have most likely been working in the mines if not for the start of World War II. He joined the US Army Air Corps and was stationed in Florida, near Hendricks Field. He met his future wife, Eloise who was working at an ice cream parlor in the little town of Avon Park, Florida, near his base. They married on 5 July 1942.
After his time in the service was over, his new family remained in Avon Park. He worked for the Florida Power Corporation (later became Progress Energy) for over 35 years. About a year after his retirement, he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. He died on 27 February 1989 after a painful battle with multiple myeloma.

He is greatly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
**Note** His beloved granddaughter Lauren Elizabeth Hafford is buried beside him. She was a domestic violence murder victim in 1999.
