Verle is my Grandpa.

The first of four children born to Uriah James & Mary Adeline "Addie" (Wilkes) Warfield of Manilla, Rush Co IN, Verle married Flora Dorset Clevenger on 2 Oct 1916 in Indianapolis, Marion Co IN, daughter of Ira & Leora Bell (Frondorf) Clevenger of Rushville, Rush Co IN.

IN Marriages 1800-1941: Book 87, Page 741 Vol. 1916-1920.

Children with Flora:
1) Thomas "Tom" Jules Warfield (1918-1968), m: Katie Marie Greene.

3) Verl Eugene Warfield (1922-2011), m: Doris Genevieve Mosier.

"Verle T Warfield, 92, of Rushville, IN passed away at the home of his daughter, Margaret Leisure Friday Evening, June 3, 1988. Son of Uriah and Mary A (Wilkes) Warfield. He married Flora Clevenger in 1916, who died May 8, 1983.

"Having worked since he was 15 years old, he retired from the lumber business as a woodworking craftsman. Survived by sons Richard, Theodore, Carol and Normand Warfield, all of Indianapolis IN and Verle of Venice FL; daughters Bonnie Mosier, Dorothea Bailey and Margaret Leisure of Rushville IN; half-brother Everett Pearsey of Corning IA; 37 grandchildren, several gr-grandchildren and gr-gr grandchildren. Preceded in death by son Tom Warfield, one brother, two sisters and one half-brother."

WWI Draft Registration: 15 Jun 1917.
The WWI form shows he had very good penmanship and printing. He wrote he is "21 yrs old, tall, slender build, brown eyes and light hair".

WWII Draft Registration: 27 Apr 1942.
On the WWII form, Grandpa wrote he was "46 yrs old, 5'11 and 145 lbs, with a scar under right eye and one joint, 2nd finger left hand, amputated." Grandpa had worked in a saw mill when younger and my Mother said this was how he lost part of his finger. He was very handy at carpentry and hand-made many wooden screens, doors and windows.

On both Grandpa's WWI and WWII Registrations, his first name is spelled with an E on the end, making his tombstone spelling incorrect; Social Security record shows as same. On the card he sent me so many years ago, the return address on the envelope also shows he signed his name with an E on the end of his first name. His namesake, my Uncle Verl, did not use an E on the end of his first name.

Grandpa's casket was carried on a horse-drawn carriage to the gravesite by his Amish friends.

Verle was my Paw-Paw. He drove a 1958 red Ford Galaxie convertible that looked brand new even 10 years later. He washed and waxed it every weekend. Grandpa was tall, thin, wore glasses and was always immaculately dressed. He smoked a pipe when he was younger but gave it up later in life and he always carried a pocket watch on a fob.

How I miss my Grandpa. Rest in Peace dear Paw Paw.

The Indianapolis Star, 16 Jun 1988, Thursday, Pg 44:
