JOHN W. BATTY DIED SATURDAY; FUNERAL TUESDAY
John Walter Batty of Eldorado, Ill., former resident of Murphysboro, passed away in Barnes Hospital at St. Louis, MO, Saturday evening, March 16, 1940, at 11:04 o'clock at the age of 54 years, 2 months and 14 days. He had been ill about four weeks with pneumonia following an operation for the removal of tumor of the brain.
Mr. Batty was born in Murphysboro December 3, 1885. He was married to Cassie Reeder at Murphysboro, March 17, 1924, following which they moved to Eldorado.
Besides his beloved wife, he is survived by one daughter, Frances, his mother, Mrs. Harry Batty, of Murphysboro; two sisters, Mrs. George Dwire, of Chicago, Mrs. William Underwood of Murphysboro; four brothers, George Batty of San Bernardino, California, William Batty and Harry Batty of Murphysboro, and a host of friends.
The deceased was a member of the Christian church and of the Progressive Miners' Union No. 106. He served six years in the United States Army.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Mt. Carbon Christian church at 2:3e0 o'clock with Rev. Hugh Stearns officiating.
Burial will be in Mt. Carbon Cemetery.
The body was removed from the Roberts Funeral Chapel to the Batty home on South Fifth street Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock.
