Joseph Allen was born in Ireland and came to this country with his parents when he was only a few weeks old. The family settled in West Conshohocken, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
In 1876, he married Margaret Ann Haley (daughter of Albert Suplee Haley and Jane Farrier). They had seven children: Mary, Joseph, Bessie, Howard, Elmer, Frank, Albert S. They resided in West Conshohocken.
Joseph worked for 30 years at the Schuykill Iron Works Company.
