John C. Yockey, age 86, of Mapleton, and formerly of Smithland, died Monday, April 3, 2000, at Columbus, Ohio. Memorial services were held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 9, 2000, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Pastor Scott Fiege officiating. Burial was in Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland, Iowa. Norma Jean Dose was the organist for the service and the congregation sang, 'The Old Rugged Cross', 'Children of the Heavenly Father' and 'How Great Thou Art'. Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton was in charge of the arrangements.
John Clare Yockey was born October 17, 1913 on Lum Hollow farm outside of Smithland, Iowa, the son of John Lewis and Flora Ethel (White) Yockey. He attended school in Smithland until 1930. In September of 1940, John was united in marriage to Lorene Scheer. During the 1930's, he worked in the trucking industry and from the early 1940's until 1968 the couple farmed in the Hornick and Charter Oak-Ute areas. They then returned to the Lum Hollow farm. In 1978, they retired from farming and moved into Smithland.
Lorene passed away May 31, 1987. John continued to live in Smithland until 1994 when he moved to Maple Heights assisted living facility in Mapleton, Iowa, and resided there until January 2000 when he relocated to Columbus, Ohio.
He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton where he was baptized and confirmed. He enjoyed a strong love for the outdoors which included gardening, traveling, camping and fishing. During his retirement years, John provided civic duties which included serving as Mayor of Smithland in the 1980's and president of the Rodney Senior Citizens Center.
Those grateful for having been part of his life include his late wife, Lorene, three daughters, Marleen McCage of Columbus, Ohio, Virginia Petersen, now deceased, and Carolyn Carr and her husband, Darrell 'Ed' of Hornick, Iowa; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, along with many friends and relatives that he knew throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and daughter.
