Funeral Rites Held For Allie Atkinson At Friendship

Funeral services were held at Friendship Church near Van Vleet Tuesday morning for Mr. Allie Atkinson, one of Chickasaw County's oldest citizens, who died Monday evening at his home in Van Vleet after an illness of long duration.

Mr. Atkinson, who was 87 years old, had spent practically his entire life at Van Vleet.

He was one of a set of twins and was born in Rutherford County, Tennessee, near Murfreesboro, the son of the late Dr. Edward Atkinson and Mrs. Sallie Irby Atkinson. When a year old he came with the family to Van Vleet for a visit and while there his father died. His mother remained at Van Vleet with her four young sons. The twin brother died when quite young. He was the last of that immediate family, John and Bill Atkinson dying a good many years ago.

M. Atkinson never married, making his home with his nephew, Mr. Ed Atkinson.

He was a member of the Baptist church and a great Bible student.

The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Hugh Collins with burial in the family lot in the adjoining cemetery next to the grave of his mother.

He leaves a number of nieces and nephews, some of whom reside in Houston.

Attending the funeral from here Tuesday were Dr. Doyle Stubblefield, Mr. Dugan Shell, Mrs. Joe Ford, Eloise Ford, and Van Philpot. (from the Times Post, Houston, Mississippi dated June 13, 1940)
