Franklin H. "Sam" Dampier Sr., 86, of Janesville, died on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at Mercy Hospital. He was one of eleven children, to the late Henry and Emma (Martinson) Dampier. He married the former Betty J. Prien in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, on May 1, 1948. Sam spent his younger years in Wisconsin Rapids and later moved to Janesville in 1946. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, serving on the Board of Trustees, and he also volunteered with the Share Program at the church. Sam served in the United States Army from March 27, 1942, until he was honorably discharged on January 29, 1946. Sam was instrumental in organizing the Construction Laborers Union Local #1440 in Janesville along with Don Samuelson, where he served as president of the Union for 26 years and a member in good standing for 52 years. He was also a member of the American Legion. Sam was a very loving, caring and respectful man, who had lots of patience and who was very proud of his family. His honest work ethic is what set him apart from others. When he gave his word on something, he truly and honestly abided by it! His hobbies included making wooden toys, gardening, hunting and fishing. He was survived by his wife, Betty, 5 children, 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by 2 sisters. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Henry L Dampier; 5 sisters and 5 brothers.
