Johannes was born in Bennwil, Switzerland. He is reported to be the son of Hans and Verena (Thommen) Spitler/ Spittahler. Johannes married Catherina Shaffner in abt 1716 in Switzerland. Johannes, wife Catherina & Children Johannes II, Veronica, Jacob, Barbara & Hans Jacob age 4 traveled to Rotterdam, then to Cowes Eng, then sailed on the "Princess Augusta" with Capt Samuel Merchant to America. Their 4 yr old Han Jacob died as they set anchor in America. Johannes and his eldest son Johannes II qualified for entry Sept 16, 1736 in Philadelphia, Pa. Johannes widowed mother died shortly before his family emigrated so his brother Sebastian (Baschi) did not emigrate with them.
Mar 1 1744 Johannes purchased 200 acres of land in Bethel Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania & he built their home on the Swatara River.
The Indian murders of Johannes's son-in-law Jacob Hantschi in 1756 & Johannes's son 16 May 1757 contributed to Johannes decline in health. He died less than 5 months after his son & was buried in grave #33 next to his son. in the Hebron cemetery. In 1900 the historical society erected a memorial.
