|Birth: ||Feb. 4, 1863|
|Death: ||Oct. 9, 1893|
Mrs. Mary Lou Bene the wife of Rev. W.D. Bene, and daughter of W. and S.M. Covington, died at Jefferson, Miss, on Oct. 9, 1893. She was born in Tippah Co. Miss., on Feb. 4th, 1863. At an early age she was converted to Christ and began at once an earnest active Christian life, from which came happy influences that did not cease when her career on earth was ended.
She graduated from Blue Mountain Female College in 1883 and received her diploma from the hands of Gen. M.P. Lowrey the founder of that institution.
On February 14th, 1889, she married the sweet spirited John Henry Shackelford, a talented and consecrated young minister. Soon after their marriage his health failed. It gradually grew worse till finally the cruel hand of death took him from his devoted and affectionate young wife. During his entire illness, she spared no pains for his comfort. Forgetful of self, she thought only of the welfare of him to whom she had given her hand and heart. As he grew weaker her tender care, her devotion and her affection increased. The ordeal through which she was passing brought out the beautiful traits of her noble character.
Her sympathetic heart and willing hands found many opportunities for doing good to those who needed sympathy and help. Truly all who knew her loved her.
For a number of years she was Vice President of Woman's Work in Tippah Association. Wherever she went many caught an inspiration from her to do and say something for the Lord whom she loved so well. Her earthly career was short, but it was well spent. She did with her might what her hands found to do.
On Dec. 15, 1892, she was married to Rev. W.D. Bene, with whom she lived less than ten months. God took her unto Himself. He thought it best. Why her useful life on earth was so soon ended, we cannot tell but we know that God never makes mistakes. He has done what was right and we must bow in submission to His will. To our Heavenly Father who is full of tender compassion we commend all those whose tender hearts are bereaved. W.E.B. (W.E. Berry) Blue Mt., Miss., Nov. 4, '93
