Update on Burial: "The farewell to Yevgeny Viktorovich took place in a closed format. Those who wish to say goodbye may visit Porokhovskoye cemetery," his press service said in a short post on Telegram.

Yevgeny is buried alongside his father, Viktor Evgenievich Prigozhin . Burials and services have been provided for fellow Wagner members Dmitry Valerievich Utkin with a ceremony on August 31st at Mytischi Memorial Cemetery in Mytischi and Valery Yevgenyevich "Rover" Chekalov on August 29th at Northern Cemetery in Saint Petersburg.

Yevgeny Viktorovich Prigozhin (Russian: Евгений Викторович Пригожин) was a Russian mercenary leader and oligarch. Having served nine years in prison for being involved in a burglary spree in 1980s, he became business oligarch with close ties to Russian president Vladimir Putin in 2000s, and rose to prominance in 2010s as a leader of the Wagner private military company, known for its high-profile involvement in the Syrian civil war and Russo-Ukrainian War before staging a a rebellion against the Russian military in 2023.

Prigozhin entered the restaurant business in 1995 and emerged as a prominent figure in Saint Petersburg's business life, gaining recognition for a string of highly regarded restaurants. This connection facilitated a financial association with Putin, who was actively engaged in municipal politics during that period. His relations with Putin developed in 2000s as Prigozhin's companies recieved hundreds of millions in government contracts for providing their services to the Russian government. During this period, Prigozhin was a close confidant of Russian president Vladimir Putin and was sometimes referred to as "Putin's chef" because of his ownership of restaurants and catering businesses that provided services to the Kremlin.

During his association with Kremlin, Prigozhin became closely aligned with the Russian government and his activities expanded to other domains. According to a 2022 investigation, Prigozhin controlled a network of influential companies whose operations were "tightly integrated with Russia's Defence Ministry and its intelligence arm, the GRU". In 2014, Prigozhin reportedly founded the Wagner private military company to support pro-Russian paramilitaries in Ukraine. Funded by the Russian state, it served as an important tool of Russian foreign and military policy, supporting Russian interests in Ukraine, the Middle East and Africa. In September 2022, for the first time Prigozhin publicly acknowledged that he founded and operated the Wagner Group. In February 2023, he confirmed that he was the founder and long-time manager of the Internet Research Agency, a Russian company accused of running online trolling and propaganda campaigns.

In November 2022, Prigozhin acknowledged his companies' interference in United States elections. Prigozhin's companies and associates, and formerly Prigozhin himself, are subject to economic sanctions and criminal charges in the United States and the United Kingdom. In October 2020, the European Union (EU) imposed sanctions against Prigozhin for his financing of the Wagner Group's activities in Libya. In April 2022, the EU imposed further sanctions on him for his role in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The FBI offered a reward of up to $250,000 for information leading to Prigozhin's arrest.

Prigozhin's influence grew during the 2022 war against Ukraine as the government increasingly relied on mercenaries for its war efforts. Prigozhin openly criticized the Russian Defense Ministry for corruption and mishandling the war. Eventually, he said the reasons they gave for invading were lies. On 23 June 2023, he launched a rebellion against the Russian military leadership. Wagner forces captured Rostov-on-Don and advanced toward Moscow. The rebellion was called off the following day, and Prigozhin had his criminal charges dropped after agreeing to relocate his forces to Belarus.

On 23 August 2023, exactly two months after the rebellion, Prigozhin was killed when a plane crashed in Tver Oblast, north of Moscow, along with nine other people. On August 29th, 2023 Yevgeny Prigozhin has been laid to rest at the Porokhovskoye Cemetery in Saint Petersburg, Prigozhin's team has announced Tuesday. The funeral was behind closed doors with only close friends and relatives attending.
