In 1902, he married Antoinette "Nettie" Hicks (1858 - 1929), the daughter of Mr. Ira V. Hicks, who owned the Kalamazoo Wagon Company where William worked.
A biography in a Masonic magazine said, "Brother Richards was born in Shannonville, Ont., Canada, Jan. 11, 1858, and was a resident there for twenty-four years. During his early life he served his apprenticeship as a Carriage Maker and was an expert in this vocation when he moved to Kalamazoo, Feb. 28, 1882. Here he immediately secured employment with the Kalamazoo Wagon Co. and the following twenty years found him steadily employed with the above company, the Hicks Carriage Co., The Michigan Buggy Co. and three years as Supt. of the Poor with offices in the County Building."
