He was born June 15, 1926, in Remington, the son of the late Peter and Myrtle Bartee Merritt. After graduation from high school, he attended Purdue University. He served in the Navy as a radio operator and was discharged in 1947.
He married Patricia J. McElfresh on Oct. 8, 1949, and she preceded him in death on June 26, 2002.
Mr. Merritt owned and operated the former Merritt's Restaurant for 20 years and also worked for the U.S. Postal Service.
He was a member of Remington American Legion Post 280, Remington Masonic Lodge 351, Hazelden Country Club at Brook, and Curtis Creek Country Club in Rensselaer, where he was a member of the Hole-In-One Club.
Surviving are two daughters, Diane Merritt Gilbert and Denice Wilken (husband: Ron), and a sister, Joan Nussbaum, all of Remington.
There will be no visitation.
Herk was a certified member in good standing for the last 12 years of "the garage." He was also an avid Chicago Cubs fan, in which one of his fondest memories was retrieving a foul ball at Wrigley Field and giving it to a young boy sitting nearby. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanette Knochel, and a brother, George Merritt. Arrangements by the Stitz Funeral Home, Remington.
