Henry Carl Clevenger was the son of William Andrew Clevenger and Nancy Jane Sinnett of Wayne and White Counties, ILL. Henry was a dashingly handsome young man that married three times. While he was the marrying-kind, he was very lax in getting a divorce in between marriages.
The first marriage was to Margaret Anne Stevens on 6 December 1888 in Fairfield, Wayne County, IL. To this union were born three children. The oldest, Benjamin Oliver Clevenger was born on June 7, 1891. The only daughter was Iola Jane Clevenger born on 21 November 1893. In Jaunuary 1895, the third child born was a son who was given up for adoption by the town doctor in Chrisman, IL where Margaret Anne was working.
Henry and Maggie were raised in Wayne County, Illinois. The early years of Henry's life were difficult. His father died when he was 4 and his brother was just a baby. Nancy Jane Sinnett then married John Heritage who unbeknownst to her, was already married to a woman in Coles County. By the time Henry was 13, he was living in the household of his Uncle Benjamin Sinnett along with his brother and his mother was living with her brother's in-laws.
Eight years later, he was married and living on Maggie's family farm, located in Cisne, Illinois. Within a year after their marriage, Henry sold Maggie's family farm and moved her to to Chrisman, IL where their first child was born. Oil was found on the old Stevens farmland in Cisne in the early 1900s, and even today the scenery is doted with working oil wells.
Henry Carl Clevenger married Mrs. S. J. McCarty in Vermillion County, Indiana on 13 August 1901. She had children by her previous marriage, but no children from this union.
His third and final marriage was to Johanna Blechinger in St. Paul,Ramsey, Minnesota on 29 October 1908. Henry and Johanna had the following known children:
Anastasia Fredarika Clevenger
Henry Cecil Clevenger
Alexander John Clevenger
Cleopha Francis Clevenger
Bernice Johanna Clevenger
Henry Carl Clevenger left his family in Minnesota when he became ill. His brother, named William Andrew Clevenger after his father, had moved to East Liverpool and was working in a steel mill. Henry died in East Liverpool while visiting his brother for the holidays. His death certificate lists the 29 Dec 1923. In 1970s Ernest Clevenger's wife relayed the story of his passing. He was bunking in with his nephew and passed away in his sleep.
