Johann Michael Hillerich
Birth: Mar. 12, 1795
Seckmauern
Odenwaldkreis
Hessen, Germany
Death: Dec. 19, 1879
Louisville
Jefferson County
Kentucky, USA

Kiefermeister und Ortsbürger in Seckmauern until 1842, Michael was the eldest son of Johann Matthäus Hillerich, fürstlich Löwensteinscher Revierjäger and Ortsbürger of Seckmauern, by his wife Elisabetha Elbert. Johann Michael Hillerich was born at 4 o'clock in the afternoon on March 12, 1795 at Seckmauern in Herrschaft Breuberg, and was baptized the following day at Wörth-am-Main, with his father's cousin, Johann Michael Ostner, fürstlich Löwensteinscher Förstmeister zu Rosenbach, as his Gevatter.

His marriage to Anna Apollonia Ritter at Seckmauern on November 18, 1819 was recorded in the Catholic parish register of Breuberg. An Ortsbürger of Seckmauern, Michael's occupation before his immigration was listed variously as Fußbinder , Küfer , and Kiefermeister, and he was described as a 47 year old cooper from Seckmauern bound for Louisville in the passenger list of the ship Schiller of Bremen, recorded upon its arrival in the port of Baltimore on October 7, 1842. His wife Apollonia and children, Anna Maria, Elisabeth, 'Nanche', Johannes Franz, Friederich, and Adam, were also recorded on the same manifest. He settled his family in Louisville, where assisted by his eldest son, Bernhard Hillerich, he purchased in 1846 a lot on the south side of Geiger Street between Campbell and Wenzel Streets, and was enumerated in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 federal censuses there. His address given in many of the city directories was #20 Geiger Street, near the corner of Campbell. Michael and his wife were parishioners of St Boniface Church, one of Louisville's two oldest German Catholic congregations.

His death from 'old age' was recorded in the 1880 Federal Census Mortality Schedule for Louisville, and his obituary published in George Philip Doern's The Anzeiger, reads Starb: Am Freitag Abend um 6 Uhr, unser innigst geliebter Vater Michael Hillerich, im 85 Lebensjahre. 5]. He was buried at St Louis Cemetery on December 21, 1879.

Michael's great-grandfather Albert Hillerich (1706-1765), who settled in Seckmauern, was the youngest son of Anton Hillerich (1666-1733) of Klein-Zimmern, by his wife Anna Maria Seibert (1664-1733). Albert's nephew Johannes Caspar Hillerich (1748-1800), also of Klein-Zimmern, settled in Seckmauern as well.
