| Birth: | Jan., 1665 | | Death: | Dec. 3, 1744 |  Scottish Aristocracy. Born the son of Sir William Douglas-Hamilton, 1st Earl of Selkirk and Anne Hamilton, 3rd Duchess of Hamilton. He married Anne Kennedy in 1694 and with her had three children. He held the office of General of the Mint of Scotland between April 1694 and July 1698. He was invested as a Privy Counselor in May 1696 and was Commissioner of the Exchequer for Scotland. He was created 1st Earl of Ruglen, 1st Viscount of Riccartoun, and 1st Lord Hillhouse April 1697. He was Commissioner for auditing the accounts of the Treasury of Scotland and the Commissioner for the visitation of Scottish universities, colleges and schools. In 1698 he was was made Commissioner for auditing the Admiralty accounts of Scotland. In 1700, the widower married Elizabeth Hutchinson. He succeeded to the title of 3rd Earl of Selkirk and 3rd Lord Daer and Shortcleuch March 1738. (bio by: Iola)
