Swannanoa - Betty Leach Alexander, 84, of Swannanoa died Sunday, March 30, 2003 at St. Joseph's Hospital after a brief illness.
She was a native of Macon County, the daughter of the late Lucius Augustus Leach and Althea (Topsy) Collins Leach. A graduate of Franklin High School, she was a alumna of Cecil's Business College and Florida State University.

Mrs. Alexander was a member of The First Presbyterian Church in Swannanoa, and served as a elder of that congregation. She was active in regional Presbyterian Women's organizations.

Active for many years in the Asheville Community Theater both on the stage and as a trustee, she was a member of the Buncombe County Democratic Women's Club and Zeta Tav Alpha Sorority.

During World War II, Mrs. Alexander worked as a secretary to the resident engineer at TVA's Fontana Dam project and later at TVA headquarters in Knoxville. She retired in 1976 as office manager for the Southeast Region of American Breeders Service.

She was predeceased by her husband, Samuel Davidson Alexander; brothers Franklin Boone Leach and John Augustus Leach; and a sister G. Rose Rodgers.

Surviving are a son; S. Dave Alexander; and a granddaughter, Robin Rose Alexander, both of Swannanoa; daughter-in-law, Lynn M. Alexander of Arden; sister-in-law, Dell Boyce Leach of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at Piney Grove Cemetery in Swannanoa
