Born in Gloster, Mississippi, he played at defensive and offensive end positions for six seasons (1947 to 1952) in the National Football League with the New York Giants. During his collegiate years at the University of Mississippi, Poole was a versatile athlete excelling at baseball and basketball as well as football. He was inducted into the Ole Miss Athletics Hall of Fame in 1987. During his professional career, he appeared in 71 games and was selected to both the NFL All Pro Team and Pro Bowl in 1950. Poole's brothers Jim and Barney were also standout college and professional football players. During World War II, he served in the United States Marine Corps. He died from cancer. (bio by: C.S.)
