|Birth: ||Nov. 24, 1920|
|Death: ||Jan. 13, 1945|
Killed in the village of Foy, Noville (or Noville-lez-Bastogne), Bastogne, Belgium.
Son of Kajetan and Rozalia Sawosko
Served under Major Dick Winters during the Battle of the Bulge.
From Biggest Brother: The Life of Major Dick Winters by Larry Alexander, page 151:
"(Private John T.) Julian had been the first man in the battalion to die in 1945, but the last two weeks of 1944 had also been tough on flesh and bone. In Easy Company, bullets or shrapnel had killed five men: A.P. Herron, Francis J. Mellett, Carl C. Sawosko, John E. Shindell, and Harold R. Webb."
Mr. Alexander seems to be implying that Sawosko and the other four soldiers listed with him died in late 1944, but the official US Army records all list their deaths as January 1945. He may, of course, have done more research, or I may be misreading his paragraph. In any event, I recommend his book, if you enjoyed Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose you should enjoy Mr. Alexander's book.
