Luigi Menghini was born in the town of Arsio, which was part of Tirol, Austria on November 3, 1887. His parents were Giuseppe Menghini and Giudetta Rauzi. Luigi translates to Louis in English. After World War I, Arsio became part of Kingdom of Italy and the area was known as South Tyrol. Louis Menghini immigrated to the United States on May 20, 1906 through Ellis Island, New York. Louis final destination was Lead City, South Dakota. Louis came to see his brother Giuseppe Menghini. Giuseppe and Louis were farmers who later changed their occupations to coal miners. Louis applied for U.S. citizenship in Terraville, South Dakota on October 29, 1908 and became a U.S. Citizen on September 23, 1913. Louis Menghini married Mary Terese Civretto in Terraville, SD on August 26, 1913. Louis and Mary would have two children Joseph Edward Menghini and Marirose Menghini. Louis worked as a coal miner for the Homestake Mining Company in Lead, Lawrence County, South Dakota. Louis enlisted for World War I on June 6, 1917. Louis contracted pneumonia and died in Terraville, SD on November 13, 1918. Louis left behind his young wife Mary(20) and two young children, Joseph(3) and Marirose(2 months).
