John McCarty was born September 27, 1775. He was the youngest child of James McCarty and his wife who's maiden name was Fugate, her first name is unknown.
According to the Sunderland Letter John's mother was killed by Indians when he was young and he was sent to his mother's people, the Fugates, to be raised. There as a young man he married Elizabeth Mayes and moved to Grainger County, TN where his father lived.
John and Elizabeth would have eight children, when their children were getting older John decided the family needed to move west where his children could acquire cheep land. So in the spring of 1834 John and five of his kids moved to Greene County, MO. His two oldest children, Martha and Isaac were married and owned good farms so they stayed behind. His next youngest child, James, had married his own first cousin and didn't want his children living to close to their own cousins in fear they would also fall in love with a member of their own family. He and his wife moved to Jefferson County, MO.
John would die November 16, 1843 on his farm near Ebenezer, Greene County, Missouri and is burird next to his wife Elizabeth on what was their farm. They don't have headstones.
