| Birth: | Sep. 14, 1913 Quetzaltenango, Guatemala | | Death: | Jan. 27, 1971 Mexico, Mexico | President of Guatemala. He served as the elected head of his country from March 15, 1951 to June 27, 1954. A reformist who began to nationalize the fruit industry, Guzman was overthrown in a CIA-orchestrated coup in 1954 because it was feared he was getting too close to the Soviet Union's sphere of influence. He lived the remainder of his life in exile in many countries, finally winding up in Mexico. He died under mysterious circumstances, drowning in his bathtub. In 1995 his remains were exhumed from a Mexican cemetery and were re-interred in Guatemala. (bio by: Erik Lander)
