Author. He was best known for his writings which spanned both the Western and postapocalyptic genres. He was also generally regarded as one of the greatest modern American writers. Born Charles Joseph McCarthy Jr., he attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1956. Readers were introduced to his difficult narrative style in his first novel, "The Orchard Keeper," in 1965. Social outcasts would highlight his next three novels "Outer Dark" (1968), "Child of God" (1974), and "Suttree" (1979). In 1985, he released his masterpiece novel "Blood Meridian." His later novels would include "All the Pretty Horses" (1992), "No Country for Old Men" (2005), and "The Road" (2006). Both "All the Pretty Horses" and "The Road" earned him awards and honors, including the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for the latter. He penned twelve novels, two plays, five screenplays, and three short stories during his career.
