He followed Friedrich's Romantic style for the first part of his career, but began painting in a more realistic style with less symbolism in the 1830s. His best known works are "Dom im Winter" (1821), "Waldinneres" (1822), "Mondnacht am Golf von Salerno" (1827), "Burg Scharfenberg bei Nacht" (1827), "Prozession im Nebel" (1828), "Schloss Colditz" (1828), "Blick von St. Afra zum Meissner Dom" (ca. 1828/1829), "Villa d'Este in Tivoli" (1833), "Die Greifensteine im Sächsischen Erzgebirge" (1840), "Blick auf die Sächsische Schweiz" (1840), and "Bergkapelle im Winter" (1850). The majority of his works may be found in the New Masters Gallery of the Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden. His son Ernst Erwin Oehme also became a noted painter.
