Richard Achilles, 88, of Marlborough, died Monday, March 17, 2008, at Marlborough Hills HealthCare.
Born in Gustedt, Germany, he was the son of Edward and Emma Hadley and the husband of Josephine ( Langer) Achilles, of Marlborough, to whom he had been married for the past 61 years.
A chef by trade, he studied in Berlin for many years prior to moving to the U.S. in 1951. He had been employed by the Framingham Country Club, Wayside Inn, and the Old Mill, Westminster prior to opening the Lower Village House Restaurant in Stow, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1979. He was a member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church, the Board of Directors for Greater Marlborough Programs Inc., and the family council for the Special Olympics. In November 2007 he was the recipient of the Distinguished Lifetime Volunteer Award by the GMPInc.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Christine A. Achilles of Marlborough; his brothers, Alvin Hadley and his wife, Christine, of Easton, and David Hadley and his wife, Marjorie, of Sandwich; his cousins, Heinz and Marlene Achilles and Horst and Erica Achilles, of Germany; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Rudy and Maria Hammerl of Germany; several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his close and dear friends, Peter and Nancy Langelier and their family, Brian and Meredith Langelier and their daughters, Annalise and Lauren Langelier, Elaine Langelier and Jack Langelier.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, March 20, at 11 a.m., at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 537 Bolton St., Marlborough. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Wilson Street, Marlborough. Visiting hours are Thursday, March 20, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., at the Slattery Funeral Home Inc., 40 Pleasant St., Marlborough. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to GMPInc, 255 Main St., Marlborough, MA 01752
