Pioneer Aviator, Author. She was the first American woman to fly a jet airplane on Oct. 14, 1944. Carl served with the Women's Air Service Pilots (WASP) during the 1940s and later wrote of her military experiences in "A WASP Among Eagles: A Woman Military Test Pilot in World War II".
