1860 Federal Census, Graves Co. KY
Robert and his wife Sophronia Jane West Humphreys died within a day of each other in 1866, leaving seven orphaned children, the youngest being three years old and the oldest 17. John Patterson Humphreys, the oldest, went to live with and work for Nathaniel Coulter and wormed tobacco for his keep.
Fannie and West Howard were taken into the home of John William and Elizabeth Watts West and raised as their own children. John W. was Sophronia's brother. The others went to live with their grandmother Amy West. Fannie later married Robert Henry "Bob" Coulter, a son of Nathaniel Coulter.
Uncle Bob Humphreys' granddaughter said that Sophronia grew ill and died from pneumonia. They laid her body out in the home as was the custom. When Robert came in to view her body , he collapsed across it and died of a heart attack. They are buried in Rickman Cemetery under a common stone.
