PEORIA -- Dr. Robert A. DeBord, 84, of Peoria died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. Born March 30, 1918, in Princeville to Byron W. and Latha Dunn DeBord, he married Betty Aronson on Jan. 5, 1946, in Princeville. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Dr. James (and Margaret) and Dr. Alan (and Mary Ellen), both of Peoria; two daughters, Barbara (and Steve) Miller of Glenwood Springs, Colo., and Diane (and John) Novak of Winnetka; and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers.
He attended the University of Utah and the University of Illinois and received a doctorate in medicine from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago in 1942. He served an internship at St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago from 1942 to 1943. He then entered the Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war, he completed his surgical training in general and thoracic surgery at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Edward Sanatorium in Naperville and the University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago. He completed a pediatric surgery residency at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where he was a fellow in experimental cardiac surgery. He was certified by the American Board of Surgery in 1951 and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery in 1954. He returned to Peoria, where he founded the Peoria Surgical Group along with Dr. Ward Eastman and Dr. Harrison Putman in 1952. He also was active on the staff of St. Francis, where he served as chairman of the department of surgery and president of the medical staff. He also was an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria. He retired from the practice of surgery in 1982. He was a member of several medical groups, including the Central Surgical Association and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. He served as president of the Peoria County Medical Society, the Illinois Surgical Society and the Midwest Surgical Association. The University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago named an endowed professorship after him. He was a member of Mohammed Temple, Shrine; Grandview Masonic Lodge 1112, AF&AM; Peoria Consistory; Royal Order of Jesters, Court No. 40; and El Hajj.
He also was a member of First Federated Church of Peoria.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at his church, where visitation will be from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Dr. Robert Gillogly will officiate. Burial will be in Princeville Cemetery.
