Helen Taft Manning was the daughter of President William Howard Taft and First Lady Helen Herron. Taft earned a scholarship to attend Bryn Mawr College, though her studies were interrupted for a time after her mother suffered a stroke. Helen helped to rehabilitate her and served as White House hostess while her mother was unable. She was given a debutante party there in December 1910. A suffragist, she also traveled the country, giving speeches in support of the vote for women and women's rights. Helen earned history degrees from Bryn Mawr where she became a longtime professor for 40 years. She was a specialist in British colonial history and served as dean from 1917 to 1919 and again from 1925 to 1941. Later she headed the history department until retiring in 1957.
In 1910 Helen married Frederick Johnson Manning, a history professor who then moved from Yale to Swarthmore College. They had two daughters, Helen Manning Hunter, who went on to also be a Bryn Mawr professor- though in economics, and Caroline Cunningham, a teacher at the Manhattan School of Music.
