Author. One of the most prolific science-fiction writers of the 20th Century, he wrote over 100 books on science-fiction and space, and was a commentator during the Apollo moon flights with Walter Cronkite. He battled debilitating post-polio syndrome since the 1960s and was occasionally confined to a wheelchair. Clarke moved to Sri Lanka in 1956. He was lured there by his interest in marine diving which he said was as close as he could get to the weightless feeling of space. Clarke was also co-author (with Stanley Kubrick) of Kubrick's film "2001: A Space Odyssey." It was based on his novel, "The Sentinel." He also authored the sequels, "2010: Odyssey Two," "2061: Odyssey Three," and "3001: The Final Odyssey." He was also credited with the concept of communications satellites in 1945, years before they became commonplace. Geosynchronous orbits, which keep satellites in a fixed position relative to the ground, are called Clarke orbits. He was knighted in 2000. (bio by: Armand Vaquer)
