Betty Jane Cox was first married to the Honorable John Emile Peurifoy. Ambassador Peurifoy died in an auto accident in Thailand in 1955. He was the former Undersecretary of State for the U.S. State Department during the Truman. administration. One of his primary responsibilities was managing the organizing of the United Nations.
During their marriage they served in Greece, Guatamala, and Thailand as Ambassador and wife. She has written a humorous account of their time in Greece.
Betty and John had two children, John Clinton and Daniel Byrd Peurifoy. They are buried with their Father in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
She married Arthur Chichester Stewart following the death of John E. Peurifoy.
