Robert Clay Allred passed away of cancer on the morning of July 26, 1999 at Lakeview Hospital, surrounded by his family and his sweetheart, Millie Pearl. He was born in Vernal, Utah, April 19, 1916 to Robert Hackley Allred and Junie Mae Gardiner. The family moved to Price, Utah. There Clay met and married Mildred Downard on July 27, 1935. Later solemnized in the Manti Temple. Clay was part of the CC Boys, then worked several jobs, including coal mining at Dragerton and manager of Campbell Trucking. After moving his family to Salt Lake City, he accepted a position at Welfare Square. He loved the people and the work, and retired after 28 years. Clay and Mildred had six children and enjoyed many wonderful times together. He loved to travel and share jokes. He was also a talented craftsman and welder. When he wasn't doing a neighborhood repair, he could create anything from a much loved tree house to motorcycle trailers. Clay was the first Mayor of North Salt Lake and served 12 years. As a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he was Bishop of the 25th Ward, a member of two high councils, served a couples mission to New Zealand, and was released just two weeks ago from 20 years of service as a Patriarch of the North Salt Lake Stake. Survived by his wife of 64 years and children, Bishop Dan and Deanna Allred, Arvada, Colorado; Marilyn McDonald, Sandy, Utah; Leanor (Lyn) and Ed Dialogue, Sandy, Utah; Eric and Phyllis Allred, Kaysville, Utah; Ermie Hillary and Paul Lessing, Idaho Falls, Idaho; Edwin and Bettina Allred, Boise, Idaho. Also 25 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 31, 1999 at 12 noon at the Orchard 3rd Ward, corner of Center Street and Orchard Drive, North Salt Lake. Friends may call at the church on Friday, July 30 from 7-9 p.m. and one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Redwood Memorial Estates Cemetery. Deseret Mortuary, Funeral Directors.
