Rev. Lawrence Edward Dunn, 72, of Brooksville, FL, former priest of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yale, died Thursday morning, March 13, 2008 in Florida.
He was born May 3, 1935 in Detroit the son of the late Charles I. and Josephine G. McGovern Dunn.
He attended Sacred Heart Seminary, Detroit and St. John's Provincial Seminary, Plymouth Twp., both of Michigan.
Fr. "Larry" was ordained June 3, 1961 at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, Detroit and celebrated his first Mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Redford.
He served as an assistant pastor at St. Clement Parish, Romeo (1961-1964); and Most Holy Trinity Parish, Detroit (1964-1968); assigned to Nova Descoberta Parish in Petropolis, Brazil (1968-1972) and temporary administrator of St. Alexander Parish, Farmington (1972), before being named pastor of St. Roch Parish, Flat Rock (1972-1976).
He was administrator of Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission, Port Huron, and ministered to the Spanish-speaking parishioners in the Northern Vicariate (1976-1981); served as associate pastor of St. Isaac Jogues Parish, St. Clair Shores (1981-1984) became pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Yale (1984-2001), and pastor of St. Mary Burnside Parish and Sacred Heart Mission, North Branch (2001-2003).
Sacred Heart, Yale, named the new parish hall in his honor.
He is survived by his siblings, James D. Dunn, Plymouth, MI, Mary E. Dunn, Rochester Hills, MI, John J. (Lois) Dunn, Roscommon, MI, Josephine C. Moon, Brighton, MI, Martin R. Dunn, Brooksville, FL, Anne M. (Ron) Martus, Allen Park, MI, and sister-in-law, Ruth Dunn, Columbia, SC, along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
His oldest brother, Charles T. Dunn, preceded him in death.
His family honors the memory of Fr. Larry and invite you to visit and share Saturday from Noon to 8:00 p.m. at Kaatz Funeral Directors, Yale.
A scripture service led by Fr. Paul Czarnota, pastor of Sacred Heart, Yale, will commence at 7:00 p.m.
His body will lie in state at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yale, Sunday from Noon to 9:00 p.m. with Rosary devotions recited at 7:00 p.m.
Rite of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Monday with 9:00 a.m. visiting in the church.
Cardinal Adam Maida, Detroit, will officiate with Fr. Brian Cokonoughner, the homilist.
Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Detroit.
