James Knox Polk Carpenter was born in Philadelphia in 1844, the son of Rachel Barnholt and George Washington Carpenter. He entered the Union Army during the Civil War in 1864 and was a member of the Pennsylvania 95th Volunteers (Zoaves). He was "accidentally shot by a comrade" on March 19, 1865 and died two days later. The obituary mentions both his regiment (the 95th) and his brother William's regiment (the 186th). He was originally interred at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Philadelphia but was later moved to Northwood(also in Philadelphia) where he is buried with his parents, two brothers, his sister Anna and his in-laws the Roat family.
