St. Paul's parish records:
Collins, Edward Riggs (april 26, 1832-drowned February 2, 1843) son of Josiah Collins, III and wife Mary (Riggs)[Buried with brother Hugh Daves Collins]

The first Josiah Collins built Somerset Plantation outside of Edenton. His slaves were building a canal for the purpose of transporting crops to the port in Edenton. The 2 children plus 2 slave children were playing along the canal and all 4 drowned. The plantation house and grounds are restored and a tourist attraction today. It is said that a light appears in the top floor nursery windows on many nights and that it is the ghost of their nanny looking for the lost boys. She was a household slave and reportedly never got over the loss of these 2 of 'her' children.

Inscription:
Sacred to the Memory of Edward Riggs Collins Aged 10 years, 9 months, and 6 days and of Hugh Daves Collins Aged 8 years, 11 months, and 24 days Children of Josiah and Mary Collins who were drowned At Somerset Place, Washington Co., NC February 2nd 1843. This tragedy touches the lives of everyone living at Somerset Place.

Tis sweet as year by year we lose friends out of sight, in faith to muse how Grows in paradise our store. When Christ who is our life shall appear then shall ye also appear with him in glory. They were lovely and pleasant in their lives and in their death they were not divided.
