Jeremiah Field was the eldest son, and third of eight children, born to William Field, Jr. (bef.1728-1805) and Lydia Elswick (1743-c.1829). His paternal grandparents were William Field (1698-1748) and his wife Jane, possibly Benton (d. after 1773), and his maternal grandparents were John Elswick, Jr. (d. circa 1749) and his wife Lydia Ratliff (1721-1798).

Jeremiah married Eleanor Sherwood (1776-1859) around 1793/4. They had eleven children: Martha "Patsy" Field (c.1795-1863, m. Miles McDaniel, went to Indiana), Rev. Benton Field (1797-1871, m. three times, lived in Rockingham Co., NC, has entry on Find A Grave), Frances Field (c. 1800-1842, m. Eli Staley in 1828), Rebecca Field (1805-1844, m. John Tyler), Elswick Sherwood Field (1808-1867, m. Guilianna Lindsay, has entry on Find A Grave), Hugh Henry Field (c. 1811-aft. 1880, went to Mississippi, then California, md. 3 times), Mary Ethel Field (1813-1908, m. Kindred Craven, see her entry), Eleanor Field (1815-1899, m. David Teague, see entry), Jeremiah Field (c. 1818-aft. 1880, went to Mississippi), Tabitha Field (c.1819-aft. 1880, m. William Taylor, went to Indiana) and William Field (c.1820-1852, m. Cleopatra Henley).

Jeremiah Field wrote his will on 1 Jan. 1830, and it was proven in May court. He left considerable property to his wife and children, and also $100 for the schooling of his younger children. He made provision for the freeing of a slave, Toney Field, who lived near the family for the next 30+ years.
