He was the father of four sons from Grainger County, Tennessee, who fought together for the Union in the Civil War. One, Thomas, died of his wounds. James E. Byerley's father, Jasper Phillip Byerley, and grandfather, Casper Phillip Byerley, were both Revolutionary War soldiers.
