Henry Gamble Armstrong was the youngest child born to Braxton Bragg Armstrong and Martha Elizabeth Phillips Armstrong. Mayme as he was called was born on the 6th of March and his mother died on the 2nd of August in 1897. He lived with his maternal grandparents, Wesley Gerley Phillips and Sarah A. Ward Phillips for quite some time. Mayme had four brothers and one sister. His father, Bragg, then married Martha's sister, Lillie Ellen Phillips. Mayme had five stepsisters and one stepbrother from this marriage. He moved back home with his father and stepmother, but when Mayme grew old enough to work in the fields, he moved just down the road to live with his older brother, "Ander" and his wife, May. He farmed with his brother until at age 18 he married a neighbor girl, Nellie Kimbrough Murdock, on 24 Oct 1915 at her parent's home.
Mayme and Nell bought a small farm nearby which had an older house on it. The house was located on a road at the back of the farm, but they wanted to move it to another road. They "rolled" the house on logs to the new location and Nell cooked the noon meal in the house as they moved to the new location. Mayme and Nell farmed as did most families in the Lynn Grove, Kentucky area. Eight years went by before their only child, Thomas Lee Armstrong, was born on August 22, 1923. Times were extremely hard for the couple and on August 24, 1933 they divorced. Mayme moved to Detroit and worked in a munitions plant as well as Ford Automobile Plant until he retired. He then moved back to Murray and lived with his son and family for several years. In his later years he moved into an apartment in Murray where he died at age 77 on July 3, 1974. He was a member of the Seventh and Poplar Church of Christ in Murray.
