Wyatt Smith Fowler was born on May 30, 1925, in Caldwell County, North Carolina. He was the sixth of seven children born to Donel Bain and Mattie Camilla Smith Fowler. He lived his early life in Granite Falls and attended Dudley Shoals Baptist Church in Dudley Shoals.

On June 30, 1944, Wyatt enlisted with the United States Navy. He served during World War II and held the ratings of AS, F2c, F1c, and MoMM3. Wyatt received the Asiatic Pacific Medal and the Victory Medal. He served with the Navy until he was honorably discharged as a Motor Machinist Mate 3rd Class on June 25, 1946.

Upon returning home, his aunt Della recalls him coming and asking her husband, George where to find a woman. It wasn't long until he met Mary Annie Miller. He eventually married Mary on October 16, 1948, in Catawba County, North Carolina. In 1949, Wyatt and Mary are living in Hickory and he is working as a cashier.

On August 25, 1951, Mary gave birth to a stillborn son, whom they named Donald Loy after his grandfathers, Loy Miller and Donel Fowler. Wyatt and Mary would go on to have three more children: two daughters in 1953 and 1957, and a son in 1955. It was in the 1950's that Wyatt built a home for his new family near his childhood home. In the mid to late 1950's his fathers health problems necessitated the need for Wyatt and his family to move into the two story farmhouse and for Wyatt's parents to move into the single story home built by Wyatt.

Wyatt served on the Soil Conservation Committee of Caldwell County. He was a farmer and Dairyman and he was also a CPA.

On Saturday, November 11, 1961, Wyatt and his son were on the way to a neighbors home on a 1958 Allis Chalmers Tractor. As Wyatt was starting to turn into the neighbors driveway he realized the truck behind him trying to pass him so he jerked the wheel back to the right and caused the tractor to flip over on him. The tractor landed on Wyatt and he died from the injuries he received to his head and chest. Wyatt was laid to rest in Dudley Shoals Baptist Church Cemetery beside his stillborn son.
