Gerard R. (Jerry) Wallace of 49 Oliver Street, former longtime resident of West Street in Northampton, passed away in the Holyoke Soldier's Home after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
He was born March 3, 1928 in Boston and was the son of the late P. Gerard and Alice (Tweed) Wallace.
He was raised in Boston, graduated from Mission High School in 1945 and immediately enlisted in the army, just prior to the end of WWII. He then attended the University of Massachusetts in Amherst where he met the former Rita M. Paquette. Jerry and Rita were married in 1948 and remained married until Rita succumbed to cancer in 1971. They had 6 children.
Jerry was employed for a short time at Stanley Home Products in Easthampton, and later started his own business preparing income tax returns. Wallace Tax Accountants thrived under his direction for the next 50 years.
After the passing of his first wife, Rita, Jerry later remarried the former Jeanne Clark of Easthampton, who passed away in 2004.
He was a life member of the Northampton Lodge of Elks and former charter member of the Northampton Redevelopment Authority which laid the groundwork for the Northampton Industrial Park.
He is survived by his children, Valerie Schlosser and her husband, Nick from Brandon, Florida, Jay Wallace and his wife Debbie from South Deerfield, Brian Wallace and his spouse Ben Smith from Springfield, Beverly Wallace from Northampton, Kevin Wallace and his spouse Rick Morest from Springfield and Barbara Habersaat and her husband Bob from Ashfield. He is also survived by his brothers Judge Robert Wallace and his wife Marie from Bethany Beach, Delaware and Richard Wallace from Blairstown, New Jersey, his grandchildren Krysty Alexander and her husband Steve from Australia, Jason Bernier and his wife Wendy from Rhode Island and Jennifer Byrnes from Northampton. He was predeceased by his brother Dave Wallace from New Jersey. He also leaves three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday Dec. 22, from the Ahearn Funeral Home at 9:00 am with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 am from St. Mary's Church. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Friday Dec. 21, from 5 to 8 pm. at Ahearn Funeral Home, 783 Bridge Road in Northampton. Ahearn Funeral Home 413-587-0044
