Ira moved from Missouri to northeastern Oklahoma when he found work as a ranch-hand. Shortly after, he witnessed the eerie sight of dirty skies from the dust bowl kick up from the other side of this state.
He and Bernice married here, brought 4 sons into the world. They purchased a 40 acre tract and built a nice house on it with their own hands. Ira liked to prank a bit and make others smile. He raised cattle and farmed - had some fingertips missing because he hurried with an old corn grinder once. He'd milk the cow every day sitting on his three legged stool and send an occasional squeeze to eagerly awaiting barnyard cats. In his older years, he enjoyed driving the school bus and took pride in maintaining it in excellent condition.
