Services for Laird V. Hawley, 75, Baldwin, are pending and will be announced by Warren-McElwain Mortuary, Lawrence. Inurnment will be in the Wayne Cemetery in Lewis.
Mr. Hawley died Friday, May 22, 1998, at the Olathe Medical Center.
He was born July 16, 1922, in Belpre, the son of Frank and Olive Laird Hawley. He had lived in Baldwin the past 10 years after moving there from Neodesha.
He attended Kansas State University briefly before joining the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. During the war, he was a test pilot stationed at Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, Utah, and Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City.
After the war, Mr. Hawley returned to farming near Lewis. In 1960, he began a career that included industrial sales, industrial management and agriculture equipment sales. His family lived in Hutchinson, Salina, Valley Center, Claremore, Okla., and Neodesha.
After retirement, he continued to work part-time in the aviation field.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Baldwin and attended the Vassar United Methodist Church.
He married Helen Curtis on June 10, 1944, in Lewis. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include two sons, Scott, Staunton, Ill., and Kevin, Lecompton; a brother, Paul Hawley, Hutchinson; a sister, Loraine Ary, Hutchinson; and three grandchildren.
A son, Joel, died earlier.
