Birth: Sep. 6, 1909
Death: May 6, 2004

Myrthus Waddoups Austin, 94, of Salmon, Idaho, passed away 6 May 2004 in Salmon. He was born 6 September 1909 in Lewiston, Utah to Philo Wells Austin and Elizabeth Waddoups Austin, the tenth of 11 children. He was a very welcome addition, because his parents had lost four children within a two week period, and his mother really suffered at the loss. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Logan, Utah where his father taught school. In 1915, when he was 5, they moved to Juniper, Idaho where his father bought a dry farm. There was no water and no well, so water for family and livestock had to be hauled in. The family was very active in their church with the church house serving as the school and community center. He graduated from Juniper's eighth grade, which was the highest grade taught there. He served a full-time mission to the North Central States Mission for the LDS Church at the age of 26. Returning to Logan afterwards, he attended some college classes there and did temple work. With his family, he moved to Lemhi, Idaho, then he and his brothers went to work in Darby, Montana. In Darby, he met Lucille Lee of St. Ingatius, Montana. They married 25 June 1941 and spent the next 63 years together. They moved to Salmon and bought a ranch in 1942 where they lived and raised their family of seven children, four sons and three daughters. He was always very active in his church, serving numerous stake missions, as stake mission president, as a ward clerk and various other positions. He gave freely of his time and money. His favorite pastime was reading. He had an excellent memory and could quote many passages of scripture, poems and songs. He and Lucille served an 18 month mission to Vermont starting in January 1984. He maintained his good physical health by working hard on his ranch. He is survived by his wife, Lucille Austin of Salmon; two daughters, Carol Jeffery of Delta Utah, and Joan Victor of Alpine, Utah; three sons, John Austin of Roy, Utah, Ron Austin and Jim Austin of Salmon; 40 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and all his siblings; one son, Lee Austin; one daughter, Rosilee Waite and one grandson, Todd Victor. Funeral services were held at the Salmon Stake Center on 8 May 2004, followed by burial in the Salmon Cemetery. Services were under the direction of the Salmon River Funeral Chapel.
