Moses Lyman Barber was born in Illinois to Stillman Barber and Mary Ann Clark Murphy. Stillman was an industrious farmer and businessman. He farmed and was a storekeeper, postmaster, and railroad agent in and around Milmine, IL. In about 1875, the family moved to Gonzales, TX. There, Stillman and his two sons, Moses and Gardner Clark farmed and traded. Gardner Clark raised horses he shipped by rail to Milmine, IL where he broke them and sold them at his uncle's store.

Moses married Dixie Waynant on 20 May 1891 in Kansas City, MO. Dixie was the daughter of Cyrus G. Waynant and Catherine Little. Dixie and Moses had one child, Mary Katherine, born 15 Oct 1892, probably born in or near Gonzales, Gonzales Co., TX.

Gardner Clark was killed in 1891, and Moses' Mother, Mary Ann, died in 1892.

In about 1897 Stillman purchased a 5000 acre ranch in Fisher Co., TX, and Stillman and Moses and family moved there. Moses was the ranch foreman. He died in 1898 at the age of 39. The obituary in The Gonzales Inquirer, Mar. 17, 1898 reports, "Letters received by Mr. G. N. Dilworth announce the death of Mr. Moses Barber which occurred in Fisher county recently. No particulars of his death were given. Mr. Barber moved from Gonzales to Fisher county last year. "

Dixie and Katherine returned to their family home in KS by 1900. Dixie never remarried. She worked as a school teacher on Indian reservations in SD and MT and returned to KS to live with her siblings. Mary Katherine Barber married Richard A. McGrew, and they lived in WA. Dixie died in WA where she lived with her daughter and family.
