Thomas Steele Buck was born in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania to Dr. Henry Buck and Rachel ?Steele?. His father died in 1805. Some years later he removed with his mother and siblings from Pennsylvania to Ohio at an early day. He married Eve A. Fisher in Newcomerstown, Columbiana County, Ohio. He was engaged in farming in Ohio where all his and Eve's children were born. In 1835, Thomas sold two lots in New Garden, Ohio, to his younger brother Samuel.

He and his wife migrated at a later date to Xenia Township, Clay County, Illinois, where he purchased land in Section 17, Range SE, Township 2N and continued on farming operations until his death.

Thomas and Eva had four sons and three of his sons fought in the Civil War, the youngest being too young, where one of his sons, Benjamin Franklin Buck, was killed in battle from wounds received in the Battle at Stones River in Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tennessee.

Thomas Steele Buck's middle name Steele, could very well have been named after Robert Steele, who may have been his mother Rachel's father. Or Robert Steele could have been just a good friend of Thomas' father Dr. Henry Buck. This Robert Steele was a co-defendant of Henry Buck in his legal troubles in the late 1790s.

It looks like from Thomas' picture that he was a tall slender man with a light complexion and blue eyes.

"...from tradition, it is believed he was a doctor, perhaps a druggist. We have not been able to locate any records confirming this. A Thomas Buck owned property on the New Garden area, which is near Lisbon, Ohio, in 1829-1831 and in 1834."
