Smith McCoy Walden, 81, Clinton, formerly of Wapella, passed away at 9:56 p.m. Monday (Feb. 18, 2008) at Dr. John Warner Hospital, Clinton.
An American Legion service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, Farmer City. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Inurnment will be Memorial Park Cemetery, Clinton, at a later date. Memorials may be made to Rucker Chapel Church, in care of Helen Thorp, 1080N 1200 E Road, Clinton, IL 61727; Joe Williams Post 55 American Legion Farmer City, IL 61842; or Liberty Village, Clinton.
Mr. Walden was born April 11, 1926, in Wilson Township, DeWitt County, a son of Carl and Winifred Phares Walden.
He is survived by a brother, Jim (Karen) Walden, Lincoln; a sister, Helen Gronewold, Golden; four nephews, Joseph Walden, John (Peggy) Walden, Jeff Walden and Ronald Gronewold; two nieces, Sharon Sterling and Donna (Richard) Wood; and 12 great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Wendell Walden; sister-in-law, Maxine Walden; a niece, Shirley Gronewold; and brother-in-law, Melvin Gronewold.
Mr. Walden farmed 50 seasons and bred shorthorn cattle on his farm in DeWitt County. He was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict.
He attended Wilson Township Country School and graduated from Moore Township High School in Farmer City. He was a 50-year-plus member of the American Shorthorn Cattle Association; 50-year-plus member of Joe Williams Post 55 American Legion, Farmer City, and a member of the DeWitt County Farm Bureau. The family would like to thank Liberty Village, Clinton, for their excellent care and friendship.
