Howard was the son of John Edward Hill and Elnora Dell McIntyre.
He married on March 27, 1926, Los Angeles, California, to Edith Josephine Ives.

Howard E. Hill, movie critic, author, literary agent and distant relative of newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst, died yesterday of a heart attack at Parkview Community Hospital Medical Center in Riverside.
He was 96.
A native of Belle Fourche, S. D., Mr. Hill was given a college education at the University of California, Berkeley, by his great-aunt, Phoebe Apperson Hearst, who was William Randolph Hearst's mother. Mr. Hill had a long career with Hearst's Los Angeles Examiner, where he started in the pressroom, worked in the classified advertising department and, later, in the newsroom.
He was a movie critic for World Wide Publications. He was a charter member of the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association and its executive secretary in the 1930s. He helped stage the first Golden Globe Awards.
He wrote 28 books, some of which were published in several countries. He wrote seven books in the health and self-improvement fields, including "How to Think Like a Millionaire and Get Rich," published by Prentice Hall in 1968, and "Nine Magic Secrets of Long Life."
Mr. Hill also worked as curriculum chief for the adult education section of the Los Angeles City School District and as western division manager of the Mason Shoe Co. He was a Riverside resident for 30 years of the 90 years he lived in California. He was a member of Riverside Jaycee Toastmasters Club 130.
Mr. Hill is survived by his son, Robert of Gavilan Hills, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
No services are planned. The Neptune Society is in charge of arrangements.
